President's Corner
James Gourlay, ITEA President

Dear Friends,

Fall is upon us and so we contemplate a winter season full of interesting concerts, rehearsals, and other musical activities. How blessed we are, especially if we look back to 'Covid-Times' when in-person activities came to a halt. I feel particularly blessed as your new President and got thinking about the wide range of folks who make up our membership. There are, of course, quite a few professionals, college professors and their students whom I regularly see at conferences and the like, but there are also enthusiasts, members of brass and community concert bands, even high school students. It's a broad church unified by a common love of our instruments and the music we perform. But what purpose does the ITEA serve? Well, in our bylaws, we put forth this statement. The purpose of the ITEA is to expand performance and employment opportunities; to enhance the image and role of tuba-euphonium family instruments and performers; to explore pedagogical approaches through new teaching resources; to promote activity in new instrument design; to generate new compositions for instruments in the tuba-euphonium family; to explore new directions in technique; to establish and maintain appropriate libraries of recorded and printed materials; to encourage tuba-euphonium workshops and conferences; to publish a journal and a website.

These are, for me, inspiring goals, which I'm determined to meet. But I want to do that by reaching out to you, the membership, to find out what you think, what you need and what you would like to see in, what is after all, your organization.

To that end, working with Vice-President, Oystein Baadsvik, the ITEA will shortly be sending out a survey, and whether you are a professor, a student or an enthusiast, we'd love to hear from you. I want to do as much for the amateur player who just loves the horn, as we already do for academics and students. I want the ITEA to be a welcoming haven for tuba and euphonium players from all walks of life, all backgrounds, all ways of life. I believe you elected me to do this, so please help me by filling the survey when you receive it. The results will be published in the Journal for all to read. I look forward to that.

Best wishes to all,

James
