Gretchen Renshaw-James, Associate Editor

Josh Bishop is the new Lecturer of Low Brass at Frostburg State University. He began serving in this role in August 2021, and his duties include teaching the euphonium, trombone, and tuba students, as well as coaching the brass ensemble. Josh is a euphonium and trombone player currently residing in southern Pennsylvania. He earned his B.M. at East Carolina University and then his M.M. at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Josh has been active as a soloist, performing with high school bands across North Carolina, the Triangle Brass Band, the ECU Wind Ensemble, and the IU Wind Ensemble. He is also a founding member of the Sequence Quartet, a professional euphonium quartet based in southern Indiana. He has taught clinics to middle and high school students across the east coast and given masterclasses to collegiate students in the US and Canada.

Pedro Castaño is the new Professor of Music and Performing Arts, Tuba, at the Conservatorio Superior de Música. He was engaged by the Andalusian Government, Education Department, to begin serving in this role in September 2021. Pedro studied tuba at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and has performed with numerous orchestras across Europe. He has given master classes in many Spanish conservatories, as well as in Brazil, Mexico, France, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. From 2001-2007, Pedro was a member of Spanish Brass.

Chanell Crichlow has recently been hired as Assistant Professor of Practice in Tuba and Euphonium, Composition, and Music Industries at the Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific. She will begin serving in this position in August 2021 and her duties will include teaching applied tuba and euphonium lessons, leading tuba/euphonium studio class, and coaching chamber ensembles. In addition, Chanell will teach classes in Media Production, Music, Sound, and Film and Introduction to Music Industry Tech. As a tubist, she has performed with Yuga Cohler (YEETHOVEN, K-POP), Ludwig Göransson, (Wordless Music Orchestra), Solange (Governors Ball Music Festival), Andy Grammer (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Today Show), Shamir (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), Pharoahe Monch (The Ecstatic Music Festival, Duke University), and more. A 2021 Sundance Composers Lab Fellow, Chanell had the opportunity to work closely with Film and Television composers on her craft. Chanell received her Master's degree in Classical Tuba Performance at Pennsylvania State University under the tutelage of Velvet Brown and her Bachelor's degree in Classical Tuba Performance at The Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Toby Hanks.

Austin Crumrine is the new Adjunct Instructor of Tuba at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He will begin serving in this role this fall. His duties will include teaching lessons to tuba majors and non-music majors and directing tuba studio class. Austin is a tubist and bassist currently based in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He holds a B.M. in Tuba Performance from the University of North Texas, an M.M. from Baylor University, and a D.M.A. from The Ohio State University. Austin maintains a large private lesson studio composed of students from some of the best band programs across the DFW metroplex. He enjoys performing in a wide variety of groups and styles, and he frequently visits universities across the country as a guest artist, teaching masterclasses and performing recitals.

Pablo Fernández has recently been hired as the tuba instructor at both the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark and the Superior School of Music Forum Musikae in Madrid. He will begin serving in these roles this fall. Pablo is a very active educator and tuba soloist based in Denmark. He works frequently as a visiting professor, giving master classes and recitals throughout Europe. Pablo is the Principal Tuba (currently on leave of absence) of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra since 1994; Professor of Tuba, Euphonium, Orchestral Repertoire, and Chamber Music at the Superior School of Music of Catalonia (Barcelona, Spain) since 2001; and founding member of the Spanish Tuba Quartet. Pablo is also the President of the Spanish Tuba and Euphonium Association (AETYB) and a Miraphone performing artist.

Arturo Galvan is the new Adjunct Instructor of Tuba at Point University in West Point, Georgia. He began serving in this role in August 2021. At Point University, Arturo will teach weekly applied tuba lessons and oversee student recital preparations as assigned. Arturo is an active teacher and performer in Georgia and Texas. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi, a Master's Degree in Music Performance from Columbus State University, and is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the University of Georgia. Arturo's primary teachers include Dr. Dan Sipes, Dr. Alex Avila, and Dr. Matthew Shipes.

Clay Garrett has recently been hired as Adjunct Faculty in Tuba and Euphonium at Texas Christian University. He will begin serving in this role in Fall 2021, and he will be teaching applied tuba and euphonium lessons, performing with the faculty brass quintet, directing the tuba and euphonium ensemble, and teaching low brass methods. Clay is an active freelance performer and educator throughout Texas and serves as Principal Tuba of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra (TX). Clay has been a prizewinner, finalist, or semi-finalist at the International Markneukirchen competition, the Lieksa Brass Week competition, the Leonard Falcone-Artist Division competition, and the Concert Artists Guild competition.

Jimmy Hendricks is the new Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the Fred and Dinah Gretsch School of Music at Georgia Southern University. He will begin serving in this role in Fall 2021, and he will be teaching tuba and euphonium lessons as well as a studio class. Jimmy earned a B.M. in Tuba Performance from the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University and an M.M. in Performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. In addition, Jimmy has participated in multiple recording sessions, and made it to the finals of the 2016 ITEC Band Excerpt Competition and the semi-finals of the Tuba Quartet Competition. Now, in addition to his new role at Georgia Southern, he teaches privately and is principal tuba with the Savannah Philharmonic.

David Humphreys is the new Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Western Kentucky University. He will begin this role in August 2021, and his duties will include teaching private tuba and euphonium lessons to all graduate and undergraduate tuba and euphonium majors and minors, conducting the WKU Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, coaching brass chamber music, and performing with the WKU faculty brass quintet. David previously held positions at Texas Wesleyan University and Texas Woman's University. His degrees are from the University of Oklahoma (B.M.E. and M.M. euphonium), Oklahoma City University (M.M. tuba), and the University of North Texas (D.M.A. tuba, currently A.B.D.). As a performer, David has won multiple regional competitions on both tuba and euphonium, and has performed with the Dallas Brass Band, Frontier Brass Band, Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, Tulsa Symphony, and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.

Josué Jiménez is the new Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at both Austin Peay State University and Tennessee State University. He began serving in these roles in August 2021. In addition to teaching tuba and euphonium students at both institutions, he will also conduct the Tennessee State University Tuba Euphonium Ensemble. Josué was born in San Jose, Costa Rica. He has performed with The Cleveland Orchestra, Palm Beach Opera, Cleveland Opera Theater and Atlantic Classical Orchestra, among others. He is also a recipient of the Cleveland Institute of Music Future of Music Faculty Fellowship, an initiative to elevate Black and Latinx educators within the music academy. He has given masterclasses in Costa Rica, the United States, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, and Trinidad and Tobago. Josué is an Associate Member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and he also serves on the faculty of the pre-college department at Indiana University for the College Audition Preparation Workshop. He was previously an Associate Instructor at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he is now a candidate for the doctorate degree in music performance with a minor in music education.

Gergely Lukács is the new Solo Tubist with the Hungarian State Opera House. He will begin playing with the ensemble in August. His duties are to perform in the operas on whatever instrument is needed, including bass tuba, contrabass tuba, cimbasso, and ophicleide. Gergely was mentored by László Szabó and Roland Szentpáli and earned his MA degree as a tuba player at the Franz Liszt Music Academy, Budapest. He is a prizewinner in several international competitions, including in the United States, New Zealand, South Korea, Croatia, Czech Republic, Romania, Germany, and France. His first solo album, Fifty Shades of Tuba, was released in 2019.

David Mercedes is the new Adjunct Instructor of Low Brass at Texas Southern University. He began serving in this role in September 2021, and his duties include teaching applied tuba and euphonium lessons, leading studio classes, and conducting the Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble. David holds degrees from The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam (BM), University of North Texas (MM), and is currently ABD at the University of Iowa for his DMA. A proponent of contemporary music and living composers, he continues to commission new works for tuba, including Drown for Solo Tuba (2015) by Matthew Pellegrino (revised in 2016), Shadow of Sky for Tuba and Live Electronics (2019) by Wenxin Li, Lull for Solo Tuba (2020) by Jean-François Charles, and Quintet for Tuba and String Quartet (2021) by Ethan Cypress.

Keith Packman is the new Adjunct Instructor of Music at Texas Woman's University. He will begin serving in this role during the Fall 2021 semester. His duties will include teaching applied tuba and euphonium lessons in addition to brass pedagogy. In addition to teaching privately throughout Texas for the past ten years, Keith is also a highly active freelance musician and educator in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. He has recently released an album with the Dallas-based professional wind band, the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, and will also be releasing the debut album for a new tuba-euphonium group, Isomer Quartet, later in 2021. Keith has previously been a prize-winner at multiple prestigious competitions, including those hosted by the International Tuba Euphonium Association and the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival.

Donald Palmire is the new Teaching Instructor of Euphonium at East Carolina University. He began serving in this role in August 2021, and his duties include teaching applied euphonium lessons. Don has been an active euphonium soloist, clinician, and educator for more than thirty years. He is a past member of The Marine Corps Recruit Depot Band at Parris Island, SC, The United States Marine Band "The President's Own," The Dallas Winds, The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own," and the Royal Hawaiian Band. Don released his solo debut double CD entitled Amber and Musk in 2014 and is an Adams Performing Artist.

Brandon Smith is the new Tuba/Euphonium Artist in Residence for Valdosta State University, in addition to being the new Principal Tuba of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra. He began serving in these roles in August 2021. Brandon will teach the tuba and euphonium students at Valdosta State University while also performing with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra as principal tubist. He is a native of Madison, VA and holds degrees from Shenandoah University, the University of Tennessee, and Florida State University. His primary teachers have included Michael Bunn, Alexander Lapins, and Justin Benavidez. He received a bronze medal in the 2020 Leonard Falcone International Euphonium & Tuba Festival and was the first prize winner of the Arnold Jacobs Mock Orchestral Competition at the 2019 ITEC. Brandon has additionally been a finalist for professional ensembles such as the Florida Orchestra, U.S. Navy Band, and Austin Symphony Orchestra.

Nathan Wood is the new Adjunct Instructor of Euphonium & Trombone at Albion College in Michigan. He began serving in this role in August 2021. His duties and responsibilities include teaching applied euphonium and trombone lessons and active recruitment of euphonium and trombone students as well as other brass students. Nathan is originally from Houston, Texas. He holds a bachelor's degree in Instrumental Music Performance from Sam Houston State University, a Master of Music in Music Performance, and is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Euphonium Performance at Michigan State University, where he is studying with Professor Phil Sinder. Nathan has previously studied with Bud Johnson, Dr. Irving Ray (Euphonium, US Army Band), Dr. Henry Howey, and Dr. Gail Robertson. In addition to his duties and responsibilities at Albion College, Nathan teaches tuba, euphonium, and trombone privately in East Lansing, Lansing, and DeWitt, Michigan.

Patrick Young has recently been appointed as the new Assistant Professor of Music, Director of Bands, and Instructor of Low Brass at Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia. He holds degrees from the University of Colorado-Boulder, the University of Georgia, and Young Harris College. His primary tuba teachers include Michael Dunn, David Zerkel, Dr. David McLemore, and Dr. Simon Wildman. While in college, he took numerous lessons in conducting from Dr. Don McKinney, Dr. Daniel Bara, Dr. Jaclyn Hartenberger, Dr. Mary Land, Dr. Mike Campbell, and Dr. John Lynch. Patrick currently serves as the principal tubist with Opera Colorado, based in Denver, Colorado. In addition to receiving accolades and recognition as a soloist and auditionee, he has performed at the Moscow Conservatory, the Gnessin Musical College, and the St. Petersburg Conservatory with the Fortress Brass Quintet on their 2019 tour in Russia. Patrick is on call to perform with the Colorado Symphony, the Colorado Ballet, the Atlanta Symphony, and the Boulder Philharmonic.
