Editor's Desk
By Justin Benavidez, Journal Editor
Dear ITEA community,
I am honored to serve our association as the new Editor-in-Chief of the ITEA Journal. I consider my role as one of a steward, entrusted with the careful management of the Journal, and I look forward to fulfilling this responsibility.
I vividly remember receiving my first Journal in the fall of 2002. As I removed the plastic wrap and gazed at the dark green cover with Bill Bell's photo, I felt an excitement and curiosity to learn about the tuba and euphonium and the many people that comprise our community. In that issue, I read about the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference that was held in North Carolina, I studied the recital programs of Velvet Brown and Michael Grose, and I learned about the life of Bill Bell through the words of Harvey Phillips and Jerry Young.
In the intervening two decades, our world has embraced the digital age. Print media has deferred to digital media as the primary source for information. In future issues, you will begin to see a growing symbiosis between the print Journal and the online Journal. I encourage you to enjoy this by visiting our website at www.iteaonline.org. There you may find additional recordings, media, and links, as well as the fully printed version of the Journal.
To expand the Journal's international presence and relevance, we would like to increase the number of translations of articles in additional languages on our website. If you are interested in serving our community by assisting with translations, please contact our Online Editor, Jason Smith, at editor@iteaonline.org.
Quite simply, the Journal is a reflection of you, guided by your insights, contributions, and defined by your submissions. Is there a topic or subject that you would like to read about? Would you like to submit an article in your area of interest or expertise? What can you offer that would make our publication more inclusive, compelling, and diverse? It is my hope that the Journal will be reflective of the many identities, backgrounds, experiences, and musical styles that represent our community. I encourage you to send an email to benavidez@iteaonline.org with your suggestions and proposals for article topics.
Finally, I thank my colleague and predecessor in this role, Ben Pierce, for his vision and service these past 10 years. The Journal has continued to be interesting and worthwhile because of his outstanding leadership.
